How this tool thinks

Start with a usable rectangle, then center the table in it. The gap on each opposite side is half the room dimension left after subtracting the table. A leaf adds to the entered table length; turning the table swaps its footprint in the room.

The clearance request is measured from the table edge to the wall or obstruction. Occupied chairs take up some of that gap. We check the tabletop, chair envelope and requested clearance separately, so a table that physically fits cannot quietly pass a failed chair check.

Room & Board recommends 36 inches around table edges and 18–24 inches per place setting. These are retailer guidelines, not universal standards. Our editable defaults use 36-inch clearance, 24-inch everyday spacing and 20-inch tighter spacing. The 18-inch chair projection and 6-inch corner allowance are site assumptions.

Seating is an edge-spacing estimate. Rectangles use the long sides plus at most one seat at each end; squares reserve corner space on all four edges. Round tables use straight-line distances between evenly spaced edge positions instead of circumference alone. Knees, chair arms, table legs and serving space still need a real-world check.

Useful in the real world

  • Measure to the closest obstruction, including radiators. Door swings, irregular rooms and localized obstacles are not drawn.
  • If you deduct a sideboard, the whole side loses that depth. This conservative shortcut does not model an arbitrary obstacle or its opening doors.
  • Measure the actual occupied chair from the tabletop edge to the chair back. Passage behind it is only the remaining gap, not the entire table-to-wall measurement.
  • Bench seating, oval tables, round-to-oval leaves, diagonal placement and movement through doorways are outside this model. A square may extend into a rectangle.
  • The sizing helper gives geometric bounds and a constrained shopping ceiling, not retailer inventory. Rectangles respect your preferred width and a site 3:1 proportion cap; it does not suggest dimensions below 24 inches.
  • Tape the everyday and extended footprints on the floor. Check the manufacturer's actual legs, apron, chair dimensions and extension instructions before buying.

Does a 72 × 38 in table leave enough room?

A 144 × 120 in usable rectangle leaves 36 in at the ends and 41 in at the sides. It meets a 36-in table-edge request exactly at the ends. With an 18-in occupied-chair projection, the tightest remainder behind the chairs is 18 in.

What happens when you add 18 inches?

The table becomes 90 × 38 in. End clearance drops to 27 in — 9 in short of the 36-in request. At 24-in seat spacing and a 6-in corner allowance, the planning estimate rises from 6 seats to 8; extra seating does not make the room clearance pass.

How does a 48-in round table fit?

In a 144 × 132 in zone, a 48-in diameter leaves 42 in at the tighter room dimension. The straight-line edge-spacing estimate is 6 seats at 24-in spacing, or 7 at 20-in spacing. These counts do not account for the pedestal or knees.

What size should I look at for a 12 × 10 ft room?

With 36-in edge clearance and an 18-in chair projection, the geometric tabletop bounds are 72 × 48 in. Using a preferred width of 36 in, the rectangular shopping ceiling is 72 × 36 in in that direction, with a 6-seat planning estimate under the default spacing.

Is 36 inches behind the chair or from the table?

Here it is from the table edge to the nearest wall or obstruction. The occupied chair consumes part of that distance. The tool also shows the smaller remainder behind the chair, using the chair projection you enter.

Can I use a smaller clearance?

You can edit it, but the result will only test that choice. It will not certify comfort, accessibility, an escape route or compliance with building rules. Try your actual chair and circulation needs before committing.

Why doesn’t the seat count match a retailer’s listing?

Retailers may assume different chairs, spacing, leg locations or end-seat arrangements. This planner makes its assumptions visible and lets you adjust them. Treat the count as a shortlist check and verify the actual furniture.

What if my room is open plan?

Enter the rectangle you can dedicate to dining after leaving circulation routes and adjacent furniture outside it. The diagram does not decide where those routes belong.
