Settle the sofa debate
TV Viewing Distance Calculator
Find a comfortable viewing range for your TV size, room, and preferences.
What's under the hood
How this tool thinks
The range is based on the horizontal viewing angle created by a 16:9 screen. Movie-focused guidance tends toward roughly 40°, while general TV viewing is often more relaxed around 30°.
Resolution only adjusts the near end: lower-resolution sources usually look better a little farther away. The output is rounded because furniture placement does not need quarter-inch precision.
Worth knowing
Useful in the real world
- Measure from your eyes—not the front of the sofa—to the screen.
- Start near the middle of the range, then move based on comfort.
- Room traffic, subtitles, eyesight, and screen glare may matter more than a formula.
Short answers
Questions people actually ask
How far should I sit from a 65-inch 4K TV?
For mixed viewing, a practical starting range is usually around 6 to 9 feet. Use the calculator for the exact angle-based range and adjust for comfort.
Can I sit closer to a 4K TV?
Usually, yes. Higher pixel density makes the image hold together at a closer distance, especially with high-quality 4K content.
Why do different recommendations disagree?
They target different viewing angles. Cinema guidance favors immersion; general living-room guidance favors a more relaxed field of view. Neither can account for every room or viewer.
